Arbutus unedo - Killarney Strawberry Tree

Killarney Strawberry Tree. A evergreen small tree/ large shrub native to Western Europe and the Mediterranean area and probably introduced to Britain by the Romans. Suitable for coastal sites and most well-drained soils including chalk. Deep green glossy foliage, clusters of small white bell-shaped flowers in autumn and bright red roughly textured berries. The fruit take a full year to mature and by that time the following year's flowers are present so it appears to both fruit and flower and the same time, making a very eye-catching display. Prefers a sheltered spot in full sun due to its late flowering season. The berries are edible although perhaps not of the best flavour, as Pliny the Elder explains that its name is derived from the Latin for 'I eat only one' and suggests that while they may look like strawberries they certainly don't taste like them!
