Betula ermanii (Erman's Birch)

Erman's Birch. Named in honour of German physicist, Adolf Erman (1806-177) who recorded a captivating account of his fantastic journey, by foot and horseback, from Berlin to Eastern Russia in the mid 1800's, undertaken to enhance his studies into the Earth's magnetism! A beautiful, medium-sized, deciduous Birch, of slender form, native to North East Asia. Moderate to vigorous growth, rich copper-pink bark with great winter interest. Pretty yellow catkins in spring. Fully hardy. Mature height 6-8m. Unusual in UK but grows very well here.
