Betula papyrifera (Paper Birch)

Paper Birch. Native of North America, where its waterproof bark was used for making canoes and water carriers. A striking, medium-sized deciduous tree, of graceful, conical form. Gleaming white papery bark after 5 years, reddish brown in younger specimens. Fast growing but not tolerant of pollution or difficult sites. Yellow catkins in spring and yellow /orange foliage in autumn.
