Corylus avellana contorta (Corkscrew Hazel)

Corkscrew Hazel. This contorted form of our native Hazel is often referred to as a Jekyll and Hyde tree as when it is fully clothed in lush vivid green foliage in summer its true nature is well disguised. Only when it is disrobed by autumn do we finally see its gnarled and tortuously twisted form, making a fascinating architectural living sculpture for winter interest. Discovered growing in a Gloucestershire hedgerow in the 1850's, it was introduced to EA Bowles who had a particular interest in specimens which exhibited strange or aberrant variations. A section of his garden at Myddelton House, which he called his 'Lunatic Asylum' was devoted to these specimens which he referred to as his 'Lunatics'. The original Corkscrew Hazel still grows there. Suitable for all soil types and fully hardy. Max 3m.
