Davidia involucrata (Handkerchief Tree/ Dove Tree)

Dove Tree or Handkerchief Tree. Native to southern China. Named after Pere Armand David, a French naturalist and missionary, who first described this beautiful tree to the west in 1869. Pere David's specimens were lost in a ship wreck and eluded the plant collectors until finally in 1904 Augustine Henry found a single tree and sent the first specimen to Kew. A medium to large, fast growing deciduous with large heart-shaped leaves. Its flowers are borne in small brown clusters, flanked by pairs of large white drooping bracts, which hang in long rows beneath the branches, which give the appearance of doves wings fluttering in the breeze.
