Medlar mespilus germanicus Medlar mespilus germanicus

Very popular and well known in Victorian times, this has become quite a rare and unusual fruit variety in modern times. However, due to the renewed interest in 'Growing Your Own' and locally grown produce,, the good old medlar is making a bit of a come-back! Cultivated in Britain since the Middle Ages, this is a small hardy, slow-growing deciduous tree with a pretty, spreading form and beautiful large white blossoms in spring. The fruits are at their best when picked hard in autumn and 'bletted' - left to soften until they are slightly over-ripe. They can be eaten raw with a spoon straight from the skin and are good for making sauces and chutneys. They also make a delicious jelly for game or cold meats. Max 2.5m.
