Parrotia persica (Persian Ironwood)Parrotia persica (Persian Ironwood)

A small deciduous tree of spreading form, native to Iran and introduced to Britain around 1860. Named after Herr FW Parrot, a 19th century German naturalist. Highly ornamental and an unusual addition to any garden. Bears tiny red flowers early in spring, followed by lush green scallop-shaped foliage. Provides an unrivalled and breath-taking display of vibrant reds, oranges and yellows in autumn. Even in winter it doesn't disappoint - when the steely greys and metallic whites of its bark make an interesting feature. Fully hardy though will appreciate a sheltered position and will not tolerate drought. Colours best on acid soils. 4-5m in 20 yrs.
