Pinus sylvestris (Scots Pine)

Scotland's National Tree. This particular variety is grown from seed collected in Region of Provenance 105 - Shieldaig, where against all the odds, remnants of the once vast Caledonian Forest survive in dense thickets. The sight of many hundreds of mature specimens clinging on to the cliff face by the side of the remote single track road into Shieldaig is a breathtaking and memorable experience.
An important variety for national wildlife conservation, it's cones and seeds are a favourite food source for red squirrels.
Native evergreen conifer with long blue/ green needles, fully hardy and able to thrive in the poorest of soils and harshest of conditions. This will eventually mature into a very large tree so not suitable for the smaller garden.
